Video/DVD

So far, 13 of the 39 episodes have been released in the US. They have been released both on VHS (4 volumes, each with three episodes except for Vol 1, which has 4) and DVD (2 volumes, Vol 1 with 7 episodes, and Vol 2 with 6) The videos are available dubbed or subtitled, while the DVD has both English and Japanese tracks with subtitles available for both. Unfortunately, the videos are currently out of print, and are thus becoming harder to find. If you have a DVD player, I recommend the DVDs over the videos, as they have extra material and are generally a better value. If you don't have a DVD player and want the videos, purchase the box set (available dubbed or subbed) as it ends up costing less per tape.

The Utena videos and DVDs were released by Software Sculptors, a division of Central Park Media. They have already purchased the next 13 episodes, with an option to by the last 13, as well as the movie. The new videos are expected to be released at the end of 2000 or early 2001.

If you are really anxious to see the rest of the Utena series, you might be interested in getting a hold of fansubs. Fansubs, as the name indicates, are videos that have been translated and subtitled by fans, and are distributed non-for-profit. I acquired my Utena fansubs from Eternal Blue. There are many other fansub distributors offering the tapes, if you look around.
